Default esc light then steering light

hi i will just give a description of my symtoms, its a pre facelift 3.0 v6 cdti 32000 miles and i am the only one who drives it and it wasnt banged of anything. the tracking was done may 2009 after two new tyres were fitted. about mid dec i noticed that the steering wheel would be slightly of centre for the car to go straight. driving home one night and the traction control light came on and then after a few more miles the steering warning light came on. thought the fluid might be low so took the inner guard of and the fluid level was fine and all the plugs were bone dry and no signs of corrosion. after a week with the lights more on than off i took it to vx to get the codes checked, on the way there the steering got slightly but noticably heavier and the lights went off. 70 quid poorer the report said road tested vehicle no warning lights on, checked with tech 2 several codes listed, recommend alignment and replacement steering arms as codes for steering angle sensor listed, cleared all trouble codes, if problem persists trouble codes need checked again and may require cim or abs unit. so i got the health report which said i needed to replace the rear banana arms also. so i bought the rods and arms and got them fitted and a full alignment done. the lights were still on. but after 2 days whilst driving the steering light would flicker on and off the esc light always on. next morning car ran for a week no lights. tuesday night lights on again then lights of wed morn till next tuesday night lights on for three weeks. then the lights came on more often and the steering got heavier again so on sat there i checked the battery voltage it was fine, checked abs plug fine, took all the wheels off and checked all the wires and plugs and cleaned every thing. lights still on. the esc light always on first then after a few or thirty secs the steering light comes on. when both lights on indicators wont self cancel cruise control always works. so is it worth getting codes cleared again would they not of reset after the tracking was fixed, or am i looking at a big bill. has anyone any ideas please

    Hi Jon IXI,

My symtoms exactly on my 05 3.2V6 with 28k on the clock.

I have spent several hours on tinternet looking to see if anyone else has had same issues as us and unfortunately i) It is quite common and ii) It all seems to point to replacing the CIM [Column Integrated Module] This is the 'computor' that sits just behind the steering wheel housing the indicator, wiper stalks etc and I am lead to believe costs about £250 to replace by a dealer as 'only they have the equipment to do the job' !

Shame really cos other than this little issue the car has been fantastic and runs absolutely fine.

The problem. alledgedly' stems from the recent cold weather spell. With temperatures well below freezing for some weeks the Veccy electrics get a bit upset and catch this little flu bug ! My issues only started after I left the car outside for 10 days covered in 2 feet of snow over xmas without even starting it up.........not a good idea me thinks.

I'm not going to panic for the mo and run the car for a few more weeks hoping for the lights to go out and indicators to start self cancelling again as hopefully the temperatures pick up.

If you do find a cure which is less expensive than changing the CIM, please let me know.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful to you.

Perhaps someone else on the fab website will be.
