    Default vectra Alternatives?

Ive been toying with trading the vectra in for something else. It may be just me bored of the vectra and totally used to it but im sure it doesn’t ride as well as it used to, seems crashy through bumps, seems to be developing more and more rattles and squeaks. When I get out of the corsa courtesy car and get back in the vectra it feels unbelievably heavy, no feel to the brakes and the steering feels very heavy.

Ive got no cash to put towards something else, maybe a grand (I was nearly allowed a totally standard mk1 Golf Gti at the weekend which I saw in the trader but chickened out). So my 54 plate 1.9 CDTi Elite, with nothing that will really add any extra value over a standard car and no mods that would make a dealer whince. 30K miles, im guessing I would be offered £9K? (paid £11995 1 year ago)

So the cars ive been considering but no nothing about. All prestige marques but obviously in the company exec bracket and obviously a few years older and probably more miles, all going for around £11K

BMW 320D SE touring 51/52 Plate
Audi A4 TDI (130) Sport Avant 03 Plate
Audi A4 TDI (130) SE saloon
Jaguar X type 2.0D Classic and Sport
    Lexus IS200 51 Plate

The above cars carry the badge well enough to convince my missus to change but I know nothing of the reputation/reliebilty/spec levels etc etc of any of them. I have heard that the jag suffers elec problems, even though its based on the mondeo?

Are there any other similar size alternatives ive not considered?

    Default Tried some of those

Andy I have driven them all but the Lexus. I found the BMW 2 litre diesel nothing special (3 litre yes) they have a lot of problems with blown turbos usually around 3 years old. I found the Audi diesel slow and noisy with a lot vibration entering the cab, very poor engine compared to the one you already have. The X-Type I test drove was awful, tiny powerband and rolled about frighteningly.

I don't think there are many good alternatives around, most other comparable diesels are slower and more thirsty and are much more diesel like. Another option maybe a 150 BHP diesel Seat Leon, similar to Golf but cheaper. I too am a little bored but think the only move for me is the 3 litre BMW diesel, but of course it is a huge jump in price, I may end up with the Vectra for a long time yet.

I doubt it will happen but an Impreza with a good diesel that could do 60 in 8 seconds and made 40 mpg would be perfect, still driven nothing to compare with an Impreza for handling.

How about an Alfa (I know they haven't the best rep in the world, but surely worth a look). There must be a forum out there somewhere.

For me, and know very little of any of them, the Lexus would be my choice purely based on rep.

I find the older Audi engine (130bhp) is too noisy. We have a Sharan 1.9 130bhp at work and it is nippy but far too noisy and not as smooth as the Vectra 1.9. Probably as the Vectra 1.9 engine is new technology and the VW is old.

Jaguar - Forget about it. Electrical gremlins.

Lexus is a sweet car, but not a diesel?

My honest opinion is get the Golf. Easy to fix and awesome motor!!!! Most fun you will of had for ages!!!!

Volvo D5 is a good option too.

    Volvo S60 D5
    Lexus IS
    MG ZT CDTi
Audi A4 - any with additional styling (s-line kit)

    ..those would be my favourites...

    BMW - any
    Alfa - purely on rep
Jaguar X-Type - trying too hard...

...those would be my least favourites...

RE Merc's - they bore me so much I can't drum up an opinion....(unless its says AMG after it)

    Thumbs down Lexus

Just read a little about the Lexus Diesel, most claim it cannot better mid thirties fuel comsumption, supposed to do about 45 mpg. It is slower than the Vectra and puts out more filth and probably has less potential for tuning.

I swing backwards and forwards depending on my mood. I've loked at an Alfa Romeo GT and an Alfa Brera recently. Really loved the Brera, but too impractical, too expensive (for me) and the missus said it was a conservatory before anything else. (Unless I wanted to be celibate for the rest of my life )

Ultimately, I still llke my Vec and I'm not prepared to suffer the depreciation hit just yet.
