    Default brake questions

How much of a lip on a disc is "ok"?

If I do decide to change my discs, is it worthwhile getting drilled, grooved or drilled & grooved for a 1.9 CDTi [150]?

I've got a 2mm lip on the rear discs and found ive got a 2mm lip on the outside of the front discs and another 3 mm on the inside!!

hence why im now buying a set of grooved and drilled discs and pads. Whether it's just me being a bit hard on the middle pedal, but i feel my car suffers from bad brake fade on the standard discs that are on it now

Personally I wouldn't bother getting drilled or grooved - I've never had them but I can't imagine they'd make as much difference as upgrading to a 314mm kit.

I've also never really seen the point of only changing the pads - it's another 10 minutes work if that to change the disc and then you know it's got loads of life before you have to looka t aither of them again...

I would recommend getting grooved discs, solely from the difference it made in past cars ive done it to.

Of course getting a 314 Upgrade would be better, but I cant afford calipers, bigger discs etc, so the grooved and drilled upgrade is worth the £160 i've paid.

Pretty sure that standard discs and pads all round from VX will cost at least the same.

Just called VX and the prices quoted, without trade discount as i dont have a card, is as follows:

Front discs nd pad kit = £85.19 inc vat
rear disc and pad kit = £85.78 inc vat

So my drilled and grooved kit will give me better stopping power, less fade, and is Cheaper

Ok, the 314mm disc and pad kit is £72 +VAT, so you're telling me the smaller and rubbisher brakes are the same price...? You need to check your VX dealer mate or shop around more - I picked up a 292mm rear vented pad and disc set for 45 quid from a dealership using carpartsconnexion.com. Plus, you're seriously telling me the rear (smaller) brakes cost more than the fronts...?

If you're in a situation where you're actually experiencing brake fade, than perhaps using the standard brakes (whatever disc you have) isn't the best idea...? I've never used drilled or grooved, but I really can't see how they would make any difference to the stopping power on a car like the Vectra - anything you're experiencing is just a placebo effect IMO...

I'm just quoting the prices given to me by my local VX Dealer, Greenhous in Telford. If they are the prices given, then yes, the rears are dearer than the front. Don't ask me why, I think its daft too!

Whether I just had bad pads, but after a heavy run they'd glaze over and stopping used to become alot harder to do.

Changed over to Grooved and drilled discs and the grooves seemed to stop the pads from glazing. Definitely not a placebo effect from inside the car.

That was on a VW Corrado and a TVR 280 Tasmin. Not tried them on the Vec C yet but will be after the weekend and will post my opinions on how they feel after a day or so of bedding them in.

As I admit I've never tried them myself, I'd jsut be unlikely to given that all I want is the ability to stop quicker... I'm now running VXR brakes and I just hope I don't have to replace the discs and pads while I own the car...

The only time I've been into the dealers and bought discs and pads front and rear at full price was for 314mm and 278mm pad and disc sets, and it came jsut a smidgen over 150 squid, although that was a year ago and prices may have gone up since then... Just seems, as you say, daft...

I shall be interested to see how tyou find the drilled/grooved ones, although I'm not sure comparing them to a TVR is entirely fair...

I guess the grooved ones would wear through the pads quicker since they are effectively slicing the surface off so they don't glaze?

I take it the drilled once have a larger surface area to aid them no overheating?
