Not a promising start to my Vectra ownership
Noticed the temp gauge doesn't work but wasn't unduly worried. Today when engine quite warm the yellow spanner light came on and stayed on. Only about a mile from home so no worries there.
Let car cool down, went out again an hour later and once warm again the light came back on. On both occasions there was a loss of power, worse the second time out. The EML light was not on though, just the spanner.
Whilst the car was ticking over (just before spanner came on for 2nd time) I was playing with the interior temp control knob and air-con button and I observed the temp didn't get cold at all even when turned fully to the left or with the air-con switch on. Drove it back about five miles and it never got cold at all.
Upon returning home and turning the engine off when re-started the EML came on and stayed on. Turning the engine on/off a couple of times saw the spanner come on and then off next time restarted.
Could this be thermostat related in that if it (thermostat) was knackered it would a) not register any temperature on the gauge and b) explain constant heat in car no matter which position the temp knob was at and c) explain the spanner/EML lights coming on?
I haven't got a fault code reader by the way, just trying to see what the possible outcome of this is.
Incidentally the small pipe that comes from the engine cover was quite warm but the bigger pipes at the sort of side of the cover were very cool.
Any thoughts/ideas much appreciated, it will be going to the garage asap but would be interested to know people's thoughts before it does.
