    Default Coolant system

As discovered at the remap day with Chipped UK, my coolant (antifreeze) is well past it's sell by date, causing the engine to run hotter than it should and consequently losing power for it, due to the timing being retarded by the ECU. Jayson suggested this could make as much as 10bhp difference , whislt we were talking and the car was just idling on the rollers, there was a click and a change in engine speed and note, which was the exact effect Jayson was describing.

Mark has kindly offered to sort me out with a change at Billing, I might just take you up on that, unless it's real easy to drain the system and replace it myself, so the question is, where to start? Is there a drain plug or is it a case of popping a pipe off?

Also, think I once asked the question before, how much difference would a cool running thermostat make? From this info from Jayson I reckon it must make a good bit. A lot of the tuning houses sell these for around £25 (Regals and Courtenay Sport) so I reckon I might just get one and try it out. Anyone know if these are easy to do yourself? Might have a bash when changing the coolant. The downside, if I remember correctly was that running the engine cooler, combined with short journeys may lead to 'mayonnaise' in the oil system. Talking to a mate earlier he reckons this is not usually a major problem as a good run will most likely clear the mayo.

Cool running thermostat does help. For the money it is well worth it.

Wouldn't know on the 2.2 engine, on my cars (never done the vec) I normally pull bottom rad pipe off, remove rad and give it a good flush, then put it all back together again. Leave top rad hose off whilst filling until it is full, then connect it and press the bottom rad hose to get all the air out. Keep doing til no more in there.

Though I would guess there is an easier way on a Vec.

another way of helping combat the mayo is to keep the oilchange interval shorter, keeping less moisture in it..

cool-running stats are usually for turbo motors which dump big heat into the engine..it's more dangerous to run too cool as it is too hot..

If you want to fit one then deffo while the coolant is being changed, saves draining down twice..

don't know if you have a drainplug in the base of the rad..( and i'm too lazy to go outside and look) but either method is okay..

just make sure it's red longlife A/freeze you buy..VX have it on tradeclub promotion so it's as cheap as chips at the mo..

Some GSi owner might even get some for you if you want..

Think i'll go with 'The Man Who Can' and wait until Billing I'll order the thermostat and give it a bash. If that GSi owner can get me 'the freeze' it'd be most helpfull and appreciated at the GSi Towers bar
