Default Should Sikhs be allowed to carry daggers in the UK

I see that ethnic religion is in the news again.

The Sikhs are now demanding that they all should be allowed to carry their ceremonial daggers whenever they want as it forms an important part of their religion they claim.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8500712.stm

Sir Mota Singh who was recently knighted (Why?) confesses to carrying his Kirpan Dagger with him at all times including into the courtroom.
As these daggers are far longer than the maximum blade length allowed by law in this country, why has he not been charged for carrring an illegal weapon. Why does UK law not seem to apply to these people who immigrate to the UK.

    Jeeez... roll on May 6th.

Well.. I recently joined the newly founded ***em religion, which have a strict code that I should carry a machine gun at all times, and to prevent me doing so is a blatant breach of my human rights.

Just add your name here if anyone wishes to join.

i'll draw your attentiojn to Scottish Law relating to the above.

In particular, please note Subsection 5

Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995 s49

Offence of having in public place article with blade or point

    (1) Subject to subsections (4) and (5) below, any person who has an article to which this section applies with him in a public place shall be guilty of an offence and liable—
    (a) on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum or both; and
    (b) on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or a fine or both.

    (2) Subject to subsection (3) below, this section applies to any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed.

    (3) This section does not apply to a folding pocketknife if the cutting edge of its blade does not exceed three inches (7.62 centimetres).

    (4) It shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under subsection (1) above to prove that he had good reason or lawful authority for having the article with him in the public place.

    (5) Without prejudice to the generality of subsection (4) above, it shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under subsection (1) above to prove that he had the article with him—
    (a) for use at work;
    (b) for religious reasons; or
    (c) as part of any national costume.

    (6) Where a person is convicted of an offence under subsection (1) above the court may make an order for the forfeiture of any article to which the offence relates, and any article forfeited under this subsection shall (subject to section 193 of the [1995 c. 46.] Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995 (suspension of forfeiture etc, pending appeal)) be disposed of as the court may direct.

    (7) In this section “public place” includes any place to which at the material time the public have or are permitted access, whether on payment or otherwise.

    Hope this helps you understand.

The question is not whether it's right.... The question that bothers me is whether a white british citizen could carry one if he or she were of that religion.

    The answer? NO WAY!!

    Hang on a minute.

Firstly I'd like to know how many people in this country have been killed or seriously wounded by a Sikhs ceremonial dagger?

I cant imagine for a minute they are all running down the street with them drawn looking for blood.

Lets keep it in context and respect other religions, I dont have a problem with it and why should you feel threatened by it?

If you want to worry, do a quick search in your residential neighbourhood for owners of shotgun licences... you will be shocked !

spoons your missing the point if the law allows ppl to carry knifes and then say when they are caught with them its for religious beliefs, and we accept it (we being everyone not just whites) then all that will happen is everyone with strong religious backgrounds who want to cause trouble and generally gets into fights or even kids that hang around these ppl will carry one and one day they wil get used..... as for the shotgun comment you have to have a licence and the police come around to your home and check the gun safe is secure and being used, when was the last time you seen someone carrying one down the street? shouting im british its my heritage??? im guessing never..... its again the one rule for them and one for us scenario......this is BRITAIN and if you come to settle in our Christian and Gatholic land then you abide by our rules and adopt our way of living..this would of stopped so many problems in the first place......im just waiting on someone shouting this thread is racist and should be deleted, its the normal way...this country has def gone to the dogs and is run by cowards....... thats my view and im sticking to it......
