Default Would You Say This Is Poor MPG?

My 1.8 vvt 58 plate has just knocked on the 20,000mile door,

Wondering why around 1800rpm when you let of the throttle, the car jerks back and forwards almost like kangerooing..doesnt do it all the time but mainly when its warming up.

Its like foot of the accelerator and bang your pulled forward as if you have stopped dead,

It also around the 1800rpm mark feels as though its missing through a certain part of the rev range(1800rpm)area when your trying to accelerate,

No lights on the dash but the MPG is appaling, allthough i appreciate mostly town driving and driving like miss daisy today i struggled to get over 27mpg out of it,

    At a steady 30mph i reached 27.9mpg.

Car serviced at 14,400 miles i recently changed the plugs to see if that did any good and hasnt, still the same and used gen vauxhall plugs from autovaux,

Anybody had this before on this engine?

If it carries on then a trip to the dealers will be on the cards but with no lights on the dash i know its going to be a nothing wrong guvner.

Big car, small petrol engine, round town driving, I'd say the mpg is probably about right mate. You need to take it on a longer run (100 miles of steady motorway) to get a decent idea of what it's real economy is like...

Our second car is a Zaffy 'B' 1.6 and is only returning around 28mpg in mixed driving.

Everything you have explained i suffer the same! it has got to be the worse car i have ever had for MPG, over 4000 miles i have had an average of 24 MPG and that is with sensible driving!

I think the problem with the throttle response is down to the variable valve timing which is meant to give a better around town driving experience! mine only comes alive after 3500-4000 revs.

On a motorway run at 75-80 mph it registers approx. 38 mpg.

In future i will do better research when buying a petrol car!

i think the same, big car small engine, i have the 2.0dti engine and i think thats a small engine for the size of the car, my 1.5dci megane was giving the same power as the 2.0dti. because they had plastic body parts

i get about 30-33mpg around town motoway i get it to 64mpg thats doing 65mph with CC on (its all about MPG not speed with me lol)

Plus the DTi is an old engine from the days of the Vec B. The 1.8 in question here has been taken over to the Insignia so anyone buying one of those will struggle in both power terms and MPG as it's such a massive car...

Unless you go for the larger Turbo'd petrols the diesel is the way forward purely for the torque more than anything - people forget that the torque figure is the more important one over the power is it's this which moves the car. Ideally you need both, otherwise you end up with a tractor...

I have an 06 vvt that I use for private hire (taxi ). As you can imagine, most of my driving is in town, making full use of the engine, and with a lot of waiting around at idle. When on a slip road and dual carriageways I always make full use of the vvt. I consistantly get just over 30 mpg, and if a few distances are thrown in, I average about 34 mpg.If I brim to brim the tank on a distance, I easily get 38 mpg if I keep below 80 mph. I try to use Tesco 99 octane.
As far as the miss fire goes, sounds like the coil pack.
