    Default Nightmare day!

Thank god it's now the following day...

Was out earlier in town and started hearing a strange rattling/scraping/crunching sort of noise from the nearside back corner. Pulled over and took a look and the tyre was totally flat (it was almost worn out anyway, would have been very upset if it had been one of the new Michelins on the front!). ****** great big bolt was jammed in the tread! Put the spare on and carried on my way.

As if I hadn't had enough car trouble for one day, it then started running very roughly, I was getting a horrible judder when I hit the gas in neutral and it was badly hesitating under acceleration. Felt like a mis-fire and the EML had come on.

I called the AA, the guy plugged his diagnostic machine in and told me that it was showing a mis-fire on cylinder 2. He said it was most likely a faulty coil pack.

When I told him that I'd recently had to swap the radiator because of a coolant leak, he said that the leak, combined with a mis-fire, could possibly point to a dodgy head gasket.

Anyone care to comment on this? I know the coolant problem definitely wasn't down to a worn head gasket (I collected the leaked anti-freeze in a bowl as it dripped out of the radiator!).

Anyone else had to replace their coil pack? My car is a 1.8 petrol on an 04 plate.

I did a full service a couple of weeks ago and replaced the spark plugs. New ones came from Halfords, Bosch somethings... Could it be that one is faulty?

The best thing to do would be a compression test. Is there water in oil, or oil in water? Maybe a sniff test would also be a good idea to see if any combustion gases are in coolant.

I would also check the tightness of the spark plugs and also check security of the coil pack onto the plugs.

To check if number 2 plug is faulty you could always move it to another cylinder and see if the mis-fire moves with it.

Seeing as it is a 04 1.8, you can probably get any fault codes by doing the pedal method of blinking out the codes and then look them up.

    Please tell me more!

Didn't know there was a way of getting the codes without all the kit.

I was a master of the Vectra B paperclip method, if there is something similar for the C, I'd love to know!
