    Default Tyre Size Change..

Probably been done before, done a search anyway and can't seem to find a definitive answer.

Anyway during the recent snowy conditions my motor has not coped as well as it should in my opinion,at the risk of sounding over confident, its not my driving thats at fault,it is in my opinion the width of my tyres (215/55/16),the fronts in particular seem rubbish grip wise.

I'm thinking of replacing the fronts only with (205/55/16) in theory giving me more grip.

?What do folks think..?Can it be done or am i breaking any laws in doing so.

I'd look more at what make of tyre you have mate rather than it's size - it's the most important factor when considering grip...

I've been running Vredestein Ultracs for years now in various sizes 16" to 18", never had an issue in any conditions. Can't rate them highly enough, and only tyre I'd recommend as they're the only ones I've used since I gained an appreciation for the capabilites of the cars I'm driving...

If you want to change tyre I'd try them first instead of changing the size, as a tyre only 10mm wider (officially) will have very little impact on the actual footprint size due rubber being flexible. Even changing the pressure inside it will vary the contact area. If you were comparing 205's to my 235's I might be inclined to consider it an issue, but I wouldn't in this case. The tyre width is a very arbitrary figure I think...

the 205 & 215 are the tyre tread widths in millimetres.

common sense tells you that if you reduce the width of the tyre tread youll also reduce the grip as youll have LESS rubber in contact with the tarmac. maybe you should consider going to 225's instead.

In theory reducing the tyre width will increase the grip in snow and wet conditions, but the benefits are minimal
I suggest you have the a full four wheel alignment carried out
Also make sure your tyres total is an average of at least 4mm (minimum 2mm on front and 5mm on rear)
Finally, what type of tyres are fitted and what pressures are being used

I did some tyre tests early in the ownership of my Vectra
The Michelin was the best performing (as I expected) but was not as hard wearing at the Good Year
The Dunlop was the worst performing
There was also virtually no difference between the NCT5 and GSD3 (in controlled conditions), however the GSD3 lasted longer than both the NCT5 and Assymetric

A bit more complicated than that
You need to calculate the tyre contact area, and there is very little difference between 205/55R16 and 215/55R16
