    Default 2.2DTI SRI Exhaust Problem

This morning i was driving down the road and heard a scraping noise so had a look and the bottom of the backbox was dragging on the floor

I had to pull it off but when i looked at the exhaust it still looks complete and doesnt seem any louder

i'm baffled - are the backboxes double skinned or something?

Yes, they are double-skinned. The car will be a tiny bit noisier with only 1 skin. The bottom half of the outer skin rusts through around the seam and then falls off.

Mine did the same about a year and a half ago. I pulled the bit that had fall off the same as you in order to get home (with bad flu, in the pouring rain, in my suit ) then later neatened up the jagged edge and checked for holes. Luckily, there weren't any holes and it has been running like that every since including passing 2 MOT's without comment.

The outer skin on mine came adrift too. I had to remove it to stop it dragging too. It's been like that for about 6 months at least now without further issue.

They're around £100 from a exhaust centre or motor factor.

As mine has proved, the back boxes can run for ages with just a single skin left as long as the departing second skin didn't rip the seam apart.

I'm just keep a close eye on the remaining skin as it's starting to go rusty on the bottom and around the seam after nearly 2 years and it'll obviously need a new backbox when it does spring a hole!
