black smoke from a diesel indicates air problems, could be just air filter, have a look if it's black throw it away and get a new one, 1st thing i would look at.

First of all it could be a burst hose or intercooler.

Second of all is it happening at low rpms (under 2000rpm) or high up the rev range (above 2000rpm)? if it is either then the swirl flaps are not working (bar on top of the manifold may be off or the drive module has ceased working).

If the smoke is occuring in the low revs then the swirlflaps are jammed open and if they are jammed shut it affects the high rev range.

Hope its a burst hose as an intercooler is around the £500 mark at a garage and the manifold (swirl problem) is around £660.

I would agree that it sounds like swirl valve problems, you want to get it sorted soon as the extra soot just makes the swirl valve problem worse or if it is caused by something else, then you will get a swirl valve problem.

Mine also split the flexy part of the exhaust just before the secondary cat a short while after the smoke started, possibly mechanical blockage of the cat by all the soot.

The fumes didn't half fill the car!!!.

When I finally found the rod had fell off and fixed it, I also partially blanked the EGR inlet and outlet, had to replace the exhaust (It's cheaper to have a stainless system from MIj than replace the flexy and CAT) and clean lots of soot out of the inlet manifold and EGR, also cleaned the boost sensor while I was at it.

Did it make a difference ?

    OH YES!!!
