    Default Decent replacement bulbs

    Hi there,

Looking for a bit of advice...

I have noticed over the last few weeks that my headlights are pretty rubbish, very dim and yellow.

So I have resolved to change the bulbs - just wanted to know if anyone could recommend a good set to improve them.

Should just say that my signum has a standard (non HID) post facelift light cluster, just in case any of that makes a difference to what people recommend.

    Thanks!

A lot of members on here has gone for HID,s.
But if you prefere bulbs. I have put Osram Nightbreakers in mine they seem to be as good as you will get.

When I was in Halfords at the weekend I noticed their headlight bulbs looked to be on 2-for-1 again.

I got some 50% brighter ones a few years ago. They are much better than 'standard' bulbs but obviously not as good as HID/Xenons.

I think Halfords do a few different types of headlight bulb now - enter your numberplate on their website and it'll tell you what types they do for your car.

I put some Ring Xenon Max +100% bulbs from Auto Bulbs Direct and they're definitely better than the original bulbs. Got a free set of 501 W5W Xenon Extreme sidelights and LED torch as well.

    Halfords = Halfrauds

Avoid the Halfords bulbs. They aint worth the money, even if they are on a BOGOF.

If it's just upgraded bulbs and not HIDs. The 2 most common upgrade bulbs are Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Power Xtreme.

ps Order from a site like autobulbsdirect or similar company. they'll usually throw in a set of 501 sidelight bulbs.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of effort and cost is involved in replacing the entire unit with a set of HID's???

From what I gather, if you get a Vectra kit from somewhere like hids-direct, it's like replacing a bulb and all you need to do is find a place for the ballast/starter units. Some Vectras have space under the headlights which makes for a neat install. You can get HIDS kits for around £40-£50. Cheaper on Ebay.

I haven't fitted HIDS because I don't have auto levelling headlights or a headlight washing system. However, if you read the numerous posts on here about HIDS, it gets very confusing as to whether you need the washing and levelling systems or not. HTH

From an MOT point of view, no.

From a law point of view, yes.

But very few people take any notice of what the law says.

Many thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated.

I am still happy with the Ring Xenon Max +100% bulbs I've fitted. The freebie 501's are a bit disappointing, too blue and dim for my liking so I may refit the originals.

As long as you aren't blinding people and don't go above the 6000K rating you aren't likely to get pulled over for it. I've never heard of it happening anyway. The advantage is that the headlight lense is designed to focus the light unlike the old reflector lenses which would scatter the beram everywhere.

Considering the standard of the halogen bulbs in the Vectras I believe the HID kit is more of a safety upgrade than anything as it's dangerous otherwise. When I fitted mine I added in headlight washers just to make it appear like they more factory fit, but the auto-levelling is somethign you really can't get around.

In short: technically illegal, but I know several people have declared them on insurance without trouble. Worthwhile upgrade purely so you can see where you're going...
