    Unhappy ****** blower + radio!!!

Am having a serious issue with my '03 Vectra with regards to internal fan/blower and radio.

Had the car in to get some work done on the cracked water pump recently. The mechanic had to take off the battery connection while he did the work. When I collected the car he told me that he couldn't enter in the security code for the radio as he couldn't find the card with it on...not a problem I entered the code and all was well.

Drive the car for a day and for some unknown reason the blower in the cabin went to max all on it's own. The dial for the blower was at 2, and no matter how many times I adjusted the fan speed the blower would stay on max. I tried every combination of adjustment to the A/C (auto on and off), temp, fan speed, everything...the blower stayed on max. Then when I parked up and went to the shops the blower stayed on, even when the key was out of the ignition, in my pocket and the car locked with the remote. I was away from the car for 20mins and the blower was still on max when I got back. This will not do I thought, as if I leave the car overnight it's just going to drain the battery. So last night, about 1600ish, I disconnected the battery thinking that this may help the situation...reset the ECU etc.

Today at 1600 I re-connected the battery, the blower went straight to max again with the keys to the car in my pocket. I need to use the car very early tomorrow morning, so for the meantime I have removed the fuse (no. 23) located by the passenger door and pulled out the massive fuse (40amp) for the blower itself (don't want to be under the bonnet at 0530 in the dark). Will have to put the fuse back in when I have the car running and take it out when I'm not using the car - what a pain in the butt.

Another issue has arisen now. The radio is in SAFE mode, but I try to enter the code but the radio will only display 'SAFE' and '01.01.2002'.....no option to enter the code in when I follow the procedure to.

    Anyone got any clues/suggestions??

Sounds like there is a short in wiring.
Not sure exactly where though on your particular model.
I would return the car to the mechanic, and request that he put's the car right.

Maybe he has got a wire trapped, or not connected it securely and it is chafing / touching upon a metal component, thus earthing it out.

Only he can retrace his steps and hunt for a potential mistake.

    Thumbs up

The radio issue was resolved...I just re-read the manual correctly.
Was getting the turned on ('SAFE') and turn off (date) display mixed up . Radio working now.

as for your heater/blower it could be your fan switch resistor thats gone faulty. if your blower only works on speed number 4. ive just changed a friend of mines and it was £25 from the dealer. they sell 5 of these a week according to the parts man

If the heater blower is on speed 4 even if the switch is on zero (and keys out), another cause could be the relay above the glovebox is sticking. This relay activates at switch position 4 only (assumes normal AC with 0,1,2,3,4 switch positions). Relay is cheap and easy to check for correct operation.

When the switch is turned between positions 3 and 4, you should be able to hear this relay click in and out.

    Here's the wiring diagram

Thanks everyone for your input...will have a look at your suggestions in greater detail at the weekend when I have more time and daylight to look/test your suggestions.

One question tho...everyone mentions fan speed 4...my dial goes upto 7...would that make any difference?

    So you have climate control?

Having looked at the wiring diagram, it is probably the blower regulator that is defective. Have you cleaned out the polen filter drain? It is located under the filter and drains into the engine compartment of the bulkhead. Water ingress from here is a know problem and can cause regulator failure.
