    Default Computer issues

My daughter had some friends around last night, and now my desktop doesn't work... Grrrrrr.

Apparently they didn't do anything, but it did get knocked and switched itself off.

Well, now I am having issues with it.

I want to do a system restore, but I can't get it to start.

It will not start in Safe Mode AT ALL. The screen fills up with files that it is loading etc, then it stalls at btkrnl.exe and won't progress.

I cannot start it normally on my account (corrupt user file)
When I start it as Admin account it starts, but there is no taskbar at all and turns off after a while with a message that some program has terminated unexpectedly and the station will close down. It then counts down and shuts down.

There is approx 5 GB of space on the disk.

How do I know if the restore function is working, has backed up any points? And how do I get the last point to revert back to? System restore within control panel is switched on, but I can't remember ever setting a point. Does it do it automatically?

I was using the desktop normally yesterday before they came round.

Sounds to me something isnt seated correctly and is causing it to crash or it could be faulty memory as i had this and my computer would crash and try and restart

If the HDD was on and spinning when it has knocked, could have damaged that?

Press f8 as it starts, just after the first display screen, may give you a few options.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Sorry, should have notice you mentioned it hangs.
Try a repair install, stick xp cd in and start the install process, don't select repair console, select new install, when you are asked to select the installation to repair press R.

Sometimes you don't get the option to repair though.

You could try the repair console, type bootcfg to rebuild the boot.ini and see if that helps.

I've seen similar problems caused by a faulty powersupply.
