You chose to drive a big car with an underpowered engine, the result was inevitable.

1.8 is a very poor engine in such a heavy car. Apparently the 1.6 turbo is ok though, smoker all the way for me though, too many miles for petrol. Would like a bigger motor than the 2.0 though.

Well I have been preaching to people how bad this engine is in the Insignia. Very poor performance, and very poor fuel consumption too.

I've owned 2 Insignia's both bought brand new, the 1.8vvt is totally pathetic for pulling a car of this weight. Even the 160 diesel versions are not as quick as a decent vec-150 IMI.

I had so much trouble with my last Insignia VX bought it back after just 3 months of ownership. Worst new car I've ever owned.

I currently own a BMW with 177bhp but it weighs 200kg less than the Insignia and though it's an automatic it returns about 10mpg better and of course moves quite well.

The petrol versions of the Insignia simply just should not be considered, even the 1.6 turbo version is only slightly quicker, but you will be lucky to see 28mpg with 25 or less being the norm, and I kid you not!

The 1.8 is not too bad once its built up its speed on the motorway, but you can forget trying to race a fast cyclist, you will lose! and I hope your left arm is in good nick because it will get plenty of exercise changing those gears at every slight incline.. Oh and dont forget your earplugs because the Insignia engines are noisy as hell.

I would'nt recommend anyone who has a decent Vec to move downmarket by getting a Insignia.

Do you get the feeling I've gone off Insignia's...

I agree the 1.8 is a little underpowered, but to say the Insignia is down market compared to a Vectra C is plain stupid.

As if a car manufacturer is going to build a car that is worse than it's predesessor. You have had bad luck no doubt.

However I know several people who are over a year into Insignia ownership and have never had an issue. go enjoy your BMW.

I would not have any hesitation in buying an Insignia as my next car.

totally agree with maverick,,sounds like you were unlucky,,i have had no major problems with my insignia, and i have owned a vec c with the 1.8vvt,and i thought that it was underpowered ,thats why i got shot,,and i no way think i traded down,,the quality of the insignia is way over my old vec c,,and the mpg is manageable, unless your right foot is heavy,,which is like most cars,,
i have a manager a work with a 5 series bmw,and he is moving to the insignia elite,as he was so impressed with it,after looking at mine and a mate of he's who has bought one,,

insignia is podgy. the 1.8 hatch weighs 1503kg at the kerb i believe, (tourer version 1660 kg) which is a big ask for a 140ps 175nm unit. that wouldn't suit me, but may be fine for some drivers.
try the diesel - much better.
