Default Sorry to ask about suspension knock again but...

Hi! Ive just got back from the garage and they have failed to diagnose my knock once again!

I know theres loads of threads about this but Ive just read two very conflicting theories on what seems to be the same problem so I thought I would throw it open once more for clarity because Im at my wits end with the suspension on this car!

Its a 53 Vectra 2.2DTI SXI for reference

Going slow, less than 10mph it knocks once maybe twice in a row. Sometimes knocks when reversing at low speed or turning the wheel at slow speed. Does it when changing gear from 1st to second, again at low speed. Knocks over bumps at slow speed.

Garage said its on the drivers side front, when he had it on the lift and pushed the wheel up slightly it knoacked a little bit but couldnt find which bit.

Ive read two different things so far that make sense to me (but Im not a mechanic). Most ideas are the drop link and ARB's, the other was a driveshaft or CVJ.

    What do you lads think?

More than likely the arb droplinks although worth checking that the radiator mounts are ok

Anti-roll bar drop links and anti-roll bar bush are both consumables - i.e. you need to replace them anyway every now and then, so there's no harm in getting them done. Even if it doesn't solve your problem (and it may well do), you've still gained.

The other thing it might be is the springs jumping in their seats, and to fix that you need the "spring seat mod" - do a search on here for those words and you'll find lots of detail.

Jezzy, The spring seat mod is something I am aware of but Ive not really gotten round to checking if I have one of the rubber covers/seats on the spring. The spring was replaced after it shattered into bits one new years eve but I doubt it was done right even though ti was done by a franchised dealer. The spring shifting in the pan is something that has been on my mind for a few eeks as I know its a very common issue!

John Robertson, normally on any other car suggesting that the radiator mounts were to blame would be ludicrous but on these things its a very credible suggestion. It wasnt long ago I was lubing them up with wd40 because they were squeeking like mad, I'll give them a look but the info from the garage about the clunk on raising the wheel whilst on the lift may point somewhere else. Like I said I'll give them a push and a pull and and the rest and see, thanks for the suggestion!

Ive got a vauxhall mad mate who does his own engine conversions who sold his C vectra because he was sick of the suspension making a racket. he's offered to help so I'll get him to change the drop links and bushes and see whats what. Thanks for the heads up Jezzy!

I dont mean to be controversial but Ive been driving ten years and had some god awful cars but NEVER have I come across one with such suspension issues, is the design of the suspension fundamentally flawed or just poorly put together? I really want to shift this Vectra on but no-ones going to take it off me if it clunks like its terminal everytime they try to move off Hopefully I can get this issue cleared and move on!

Poor parts more than anything else, bad bushes, crap metal used for springs etc.

    Two words...cost cutting

So do I buy the generic partco stuff or do I get the vauxhall stuff? Its not still the same rubbish is it?

Thanks for the honesty though, I know lots of people on here obviously love their cars but this Vauxhall is by far the worst car Ive ever owned and I'll never touch another with a barge pole if I'm honest!

TBH your partco stuff may be better than some of the VX stuff. Why pay double the price for something that will last the same/less time than pattern parts.

I'll say that parts such as the exhaust on the Vec are actually pretty high quality and its normally the brackets that break before a hole opens up. The front wishbones also seem to be pretty well made as I have heard of very few cases of them failing. It just seems to be the little things that they overlooked
