Default temp gauge is a yoyo

ello peeps, the title says it all! so i`m going to fit a new thermostat and temp sender unit at the weekend, but, i`ve seen on some threads it has to have RED antifreeze, why not BLUE? and where do i get it from? also doing an engine flush with oil & filter as the last service record was 30k back. [only had the car a few weeks} the motor has done 140k but runs sweet and full history up to 110k, its had new front discs and pads, complete exhaust, new springs & shocks front & rear, new cutch 40k back, cam belt @ 90k,{is it due another soon?} new steering rack for mot last august, and finally new battery 8 months ago, hope it does me for long time, my son in law says he will have it when i want to change, maybe to an SRi me thinks, bye for now.

Blue antifreeze is 'old' technology.. the Red coolant is specially blended for use in cars with alloy components in the engine ( like yours) with buffers and acids to prevent internal corrosion far far longer then the blue..Also, blue and red should never be mixed, so unless you are doing a full system drain and flush you will have to use red..

Blue antifreeze is good for 3 years absolute max, where as the red is good for 5 years..

stick with red.. it's obtainable from any motor factors..

as for the cambelt, if it's an 1800 then yes, it's getting very close to needing one again..certainly within the next 10,000 miles..

the yo'yo ing temp guage sounds like a sender issue, the thermostats just fail 'open' or 'closed'..

40k on the cambelt although VX orginally said higher, so another 20k to go.

Just replaced the Thermostat on a 1.8 which had the same issue and it solved it although I would recommend changing the sender unit at the same time for the sake of a few quid. You should be able to get away with changing the sender and losing very little anti freeze if you are quick and do it cold, release the coolant cap to release the pressure first. I would go for changing the thermostat as well tho as this engine seems to go through them and is a common fault.
