Default Unexplained water loss 1.9 CDTi

My 1.9 Cdti 16v has started to use a lot of water. My local garage found a leaking hose and replaced the jubilee clip. But it still uses about 1 ltr every 40 miles.

The garage has had it for 2 more days and can find no leaks at all. The level doesn't drop when the car is left on idle (even after 2 hours) but drive 20 miles and the radiator level light comes on.

There is no steam from the exhaust, and no oil in water or water in the oil.

The car is driving as well as usual.

After a run it sometimes smells hot & steamy near the front, but the source of this is not visible when the bonnet is opened. The carpets are also dry but the temperature gauge is sporadic even though the heater blows hot as usual.

Can ANYONE shed any light on this???

    Please??

Could be a faulty pressure cap on the expansion tank, letting coolant drain out via the overflow, it could also be a leakinh headgasket pressurising the cooling system.

Did the garage pressure test the cooling system? i would hazard a guess at the cap being faulty tho.

Sounds like you have a leak somewhere where the engine gets hot, so while the car is running the coolant is evaporating. Look for staining from the coolant around the engine, it should be the same colour as your coolant.

Thanks, the cap is very tight, and doesn't tighten easily, so will try and get a new one tomorrow, see if that helps. What symptoms would I see if a blown head gasket is pressurising the system?

Bubbles in the expansion tank more likely if the car drives the same that the pressure cap has gone is there any staining on the expansion tank?

Get the workshop or mot station to hold the emissions probe in the mouth of the expansion tank,it may register on the meter or possibly see bubbles in the tank.

I think I've found a leak, but don't know where it's coming from. On the bulkhead 2 cables come out of the car into the engine compartment. These ARE NOT the heater pipes, they are much thinner and head over to the gearbox area (clutch cables?). The leak appears to be around the grommet that these cables come out of, and is dripping onto the crossmember below this.

This makes me think that the leak is inside the car, but is not getting my carpets wet.

Again if anyone can shed any light on this, I would appreciate it.

Just found out they are the gear selector cables. This seems to be where the leak is.

For anyone technical out there, is there any chance that this could be a faulty Thermostat? Have found out that the water is blowing out of the expansion tank overflow. The garage is sure it's not the Head gasket, and reckon it is the thermostat.

If the water is leaking out of the gear selector cables where they come through the bulkhead...

First check the water definitely isn't dripping down on to them from the expansion tank or anything else under the bonnet. This will rule in/out anything like a faulty expansion tank cap, a split expansion tank, or a leak on any one of the pipes or other cooling system components.

Then if the water is definitely coming through the seals around gear selector cables (i.e. the water is definitely coming from inside the car) then it sounds like either the heater matrix or the pipes that connect to it (all inside the dashboard) - has sprung a leak.

    Pictures are always useful...
