Default loss of power, revs bouncing

My car been playing up again, driving along and all of a sudden you will lose power and the revs start to drop, put my foot to the floor to try and accelerate and their no power then all of a sudden the power comes back, but while losing power the revs are bouncing up and down. Their is no warning lights or anything showing, but when the power comes back and i rev it a bit loads of black smoke out the back, thick sooty smoke. Forgot to mention the car is a 2.0DTi with 79k on the clock,

Any help much appreciated on this as it doing my head in.

    Cheers

Can't help, but mine is having this problem too. Signum 2,0 DTI. Occasionally goes into limp home and spanner light comes on. I took it to Vauxhall dealers and the said throttle sensor and fuel pump (ecu) needs replacing. Quoted me £3000!!!! I'm getting a second opinion and will post my findings.

Forgot to mention... rev counted occasionally bounces up and down when idling.

All problems intermittent, mostly the car drives fine.

Let us know what your second opinion says. If they agree with the dealer, then I'd probably have just the throttle body changed first (it may be that the throttle valve is sticking and/or the throttle valve position sensor - if your car has one - is faulty). This is much cheaper than the fuel pump and will save you having to replace the pump as well if the new throttle body alone fixes the problem.

Iv'e had the same problem with my 2.2 DTi Signum. Had it in the garage last week and they fitted a new throttle body on the warranty. Got it back yesterday and it seems okay. Time will tell.
