Default Have I been ripped off ?

While was away earlier this month, my wife called a local independent mechanic in outer north London to ask him to fix the power steering on our Vectra, which would not work. I do not know if the power steering is driven by the electrics (either by an electric pump or something else) but in any event the problem was fixed satisfactorily but my wife was charged £967 comprising:

    Parts
    ------
    Alternator (intelligent, OE) £298
    Drive belt £21.80
    New battery £98

    Services
    ----------
Courier charge for delivery of alternator to mechanic's garage from the Main dealer £90
Recovery- moving vehicle 1 mile from our home to the mechanic £65
labour (number of hours not specified) £250
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    subtotal £822.80
    VAT@17.5% £143.99
    Total £966.79

My wife, desperate to get the car fixed urgently, agreed to pay on the telephone but now that she has paid and seen the invoice (which only shows theabove) we wonder if we have been ripped off.

Any comments from members would be appreciated.

You need to see the invoice for the courier, and also the alternator, as proof that your garage actually paid those amounts. The £298 for the alternator sounds like the retail price, and it isn't very credible that your garage didn't buy it at a trade price. Ask for the VAT invoice for the alternator, not just a note that mentions what the retail price is. IF they won't provide that, ask which Vauxhall dealer they bought it from, and give their parts department a call and ask for the trade price of the alternator, as well as asking if they had a courier pick up for one.

    New battery £98

www.eurocarparts.com sell a premuim brand battery for the Vec at less than £80.
    The budget jobs are £40-£60.
    Alternators around £150.
As I don't know what spec/trim level your car, I can't get an exact pricing.

It's hard to say what's gone on there, the prices seem rather high, but you've not told us what the car was doing. Im not sure if the Vectra has EPAS or PAS, never really gave it any thought.
It sounds unlikely that the battery and alternator would be faulty without throwing up a million different problems and warning lights. You'd also have starting issues.

The labour charge at £250, would be (assuming they're VERY expensive on labour) 5hrs+ work and I don't think any properly equipped garage is going to take 5 hours to diagnose a fault, then change a battery and alternator.

I've NEVER heard of a garage charging courier fee's, that should be included in the parts cost....
I conclude that there has been at least a pinch of **** taking gone on there.

Never let the missus take a car in for repair work, dodgy garages basically scare them into thinking they're going to die if they don't spend a fortune on repairs.....

Lastly I doubt any of the parts came from VX.

I would also question their diagnosis, and how they have gone about charging you IMO an excessive amount for it.

I would be extremely unhappy about that list.

It might be an alternator belt.

£250 labour would be what, about 5 hours @ £50 an hour? That's a bit long to fit a new alternator and battery. I had mine done in 2.
