Default 1 average speed camera covering 3 lanes

hi,just travelled up the m1 tonight from j25 to j28, i noticed only 1 average speed camera at one of the sites, having to cover all 3 lanes. can one camera take all the reg plates of all 3 lanes ? i was the slowest car, travelling at 51 mph.

No the equipment (and subsequent Type Approval) does not permit that
This is probably the result of a change in road layout where the camera was covering one lane on a contraflow, which has now changed or been removed

I don't think it really matters if it was only covering one lane, as the next set will no doubt cover all.

I travel that part of m1 daily and it's a bind at the mo.

    EDIT:

How do you know they are not working?

read a piece in motoring rag as the next generation of specs cameras being developed and tested now can even track lane changes as they use ANPRS technology and can track up to 2000 cars a minute. More woes for the motorist

That device is already in use
However it still has one camera per lane
The Home Office Type Approval on SPECS3 did not allow prosecution for lane changes, but from SPECS6 onwards this is permitted
Equally, it is not permitted to be interlocked with external equipment, so it won't allow ANPR processing at the same time

Furthermore, PIPS have also developed a similar system
Ironically, it is the opposite and has been approved for ANPR use but not speed detection
The advantage of PIPS is that it is wireless and so a revised model is expected by the end of the year
There are already several installed along the M8, but at present they are only used for traffic monitoring purposes (removing the need for expensive road based induction loops)

I cruise up that part of the motorway at 52 on the Tomtom. Done it for 18 months and no nips.

If you were saying the 55 was on your speedo, then due to it slightly over reading, I would say no.

    Depends on the trigger speed
They simply capture all vehicles as they pass
The distance is known between them, so at the second camera the system calculates the speed
If the speed is above the trigger speed then both images are saved for processing, if not then they are deleted (allegedly!)

However, there are some operational flaws with SPECS, as well as some dreadful blind spots
It really depends on where they are used and how they are installed

There are numerous ones on the M73, A80, M80 at those roadworks, temporary speed limit 40mph
In the first four weeks there were just 23 Notices of Intended Prosecution from the SPECS cameras
However, in the same period there were 126 issued from other methods
I am waiting to see how many of all these eventually end up in my local court
At last weeks hearing (offences from August and September 2009) only three proceeded to trial, and they were all cancelled by the Fiscal, as yet again the police officers failed to turn up (seems to happen almost all the time now!)
