    Vehicle : Vectra C Estate (150) Nav

    Trim : SRi

    Engine : 1.9 CDTi (150)

    Year : 2006

    Mileage : 126000

Default 'Range' or 'Remaining fuel guestimate'

    Hi guys,

Apologies if this has been discussed before, I've not checked to be honest!

I'm just wondering if all the Vec Cs are the same? I had to fill up for the 2nd time since I bought the car yesterday and noticed that it was, how shall we say... a little over eager for me to fill up? I know it's a diesel and it's bad to run out of diesel (mkay?) but the warning came up bang on an eighth of a tank to go with "range 30 miles". I reckon that's under estimated by at least 20 miles!

I then drove another 25 miles and the "range" display on the CID went down to 0 miles. The fuel gauge was on about 1/16 tank at that point. I then drove about another 10 miles before I didn't feel lucky punk, chickened out and filled up. I got 55 litres in, which should mean that there was about 5 litres left in the tank when I stopped - loads!

So, is everyone's this innacurate, i.e. it's intentional design to prevent you from running out or am I the only one? If it's everyone, how many miles has everyone done past the "range = 0" point? Do I feel a poll coming on?

Its designed to be a bit that way to stop fools running out of fuel. Also the last 30 miles or so will change according to your actual mpg at that point.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

My fuel comp on my cdti is the same m8 not accurate at all, ive ran out of diesel when theres been supposedly 14 miles left! And when my mate was usin it he'd return it with 0 miles in the range but the petrol gauge looks as if theres still a fair bit in it. I always gi by what the gauge shows mate think its more accurate

View it as a toy only. Use your fuel gauge to judge your fuel. I look at it this way:

fuel light on = I should probably get fuel soon
fuel light flashing = get fuel at the next petrol station I see

Bit extreme - I'd be putting in half a litre every ten minutes when I saw one...

And againwith that Audi A6 4.0 V8 Diesel... I think it's more to do with the manufacturer's covering their arses so when you run out and wreck the engine because of the air you've put in it they've got just cause to say you were being an idiot...

I find the range computer in the estate to be very inaccurate, especially when compared to my previous hatchback. I'm sure at somepoint somebody mentioned it might be to do with the shape of the tank on the estate
