Default Pros and cons of an automatic?

What are the pros and cons of an automatic 1.9 CDTi over a manual? I've seen a really nice auto vec with snow flakes and a vxr body kit and i'm thinkin' of buyin' it. Thanks for any feed back.

well I drive a lot in london, stop start stop start and all that... wouldn't give a xxxx for a manual! been on auto for years now and if you know what you're doing with them, you can have just as much fun burning boy racers off the lights

Downsides are less consumption, expensive repairs and not too good in ice and snow.

They go wrong for 2 main reasons:

    1. Improper maintenance.
    2. Improper driving.

If you decide to go for an auto, be sure to check at least 2 things regarding the gearbox:

    1. Car's service book, to see if the gearbox oil was changed on time (every 60.000 Km)
    2. Take a tour with the car and use all gears from 1 to 6, from 6 to 5 and the Reverse one. NOT in manual position, but in automatic.

My car has a slight problem due to oil not being changed until 120.000 Km: when I cruise in 5th gear (2200-2500 rpm) and I hit the accelerator hard, I get a really bad jerk when it goes from 5th to 4th.

Make sure you check all gears this way. Cruise at 1800-2000 rpm in every gear and press hard on the accelerator.

Although it's quite expensive to repair it, it's not cheaper to repair a manual either. People who say automatic gears are more expensive to repair if they go wrong, I'm pretty sure they never thought about the costs of a faulty dual mass flywheel (DMF).

Thanks for the heads up mate, if I go for it I'll be sure to check these things.

It really is a smart looking car If I can manage to get it and its in good nick I'll be a very happy boy.

I've had my auto for 3 years and not had a problem with it, average 40 mpg. I love it, wouldn't go back to a manual.

40 mpg is the best I can get out of it. If it was just motorways it would be slightly higher, I never hammer it though, maybe boot it up a slip road every now and again just to clear it's throat.
