    Default Sidelights - MOT failure?

Occasionally recently when I've started her up, the centre display has been telling me that my nearside front sidelight hasn't been working. After a few secs though, the bulb strikes and everything is fine.

MOT tomorrow, is the sidelight part of the test? I never use mine, it's either no lights at all, or headlamps on...

Side lights are part of the MOT, I had a set of Super White bulbs in my side lights and the Vaux garage failed it because they said they had a blue tint(Hardley noticable)!!

    Oh crap...

Any idea why my lights would intermittently fail? I'm hoping it's just a dodgy bulb...

side lights are for parking in 40+mph limits not for driving anyway. Its probably a bad connecting or a bad lamp.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Any light fitted to the exterior of the car must be fully operational for the MOT. With the possible exception of the reverse lamp. On the Westfield, the switch for the reverse lamp smashes against the transimission tunnel under heavy acceleration (because it uses a ford type 9 gearbox), so changing it for the MOT is totally pointless. Never failed for it though.

Reverse light is definitely not part of MOT, car isn't even required to have one.

Also, sidelights apparently can be used for driving under street lamp lit roads. Someone on here said in those circumstances only a light to mark the 4 corners was required. Although personally i don't understand why you wouldn't want to make your car as visible as possible (ie headlights on) and it does my head in seeing people driving around in the dark with just sidelights on.

Back on topic, I would change the bulbs just to be safe. Would be a pain to fail MOT just on sidelights.

And front fog lights - unless the lenses are cracked and pose a risk to the public.

Full MOT regs for lighting (and other stuff) here:- http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/mot_section_one.htm

A car DOES have to have a reverse light under Vehicle Construction and Use Regs, but its not MOT testable. So you'll pass the MOT but as you're reversing out of the garage and Mr Traffic Officer sees you, he'll pull you and give you a VDRS, great eh? Front fogs aren't testable at all, so the quote that '...all lights fitted to the outside of a car must work for the MOT...' is wrong and quite bizarrely, if you remove all side lights, including wiring and switch, so that there is no side light circuit in existance on the vehicle, then NONE, thats NONE of the lights need to work and it would pass an MOT, FACT, though don't ask me why (note to self, must ask our VOSA VE why that is...)
