Jumpy gear changes

Hey guys

I have and automatic and tbh i dont know when the transmission oil was last changed

Recently i have noticed it has become a much jumpier ride during gear changes in auto. And when i switch to semi auto it sometimes hestitates during gear change, like its in neutral for a second

Can a oil change sort this problem or does it seem more major?

The last owner said he kept it all well serviced etc, and i guess i took his word for it but the jerkiness is deffinately not right and just wondering if oil will make a difference at this stage or if its too late?

Had the same with my 02 GSi when I bought it at 57k with FSH. Found out later that VX recommend a change every 4k or 4 years but is often overlooked by stealers.

I eventually changed the box oil at around 65k and it made a world of difference.

Well thankyou. I'll check it later today as i believe it may probably have been neglected like yours too

Just hoping there isnt lasting damage, as it does seem to be rather jumpy all of a sudden

Senile moment (again), sorry. Yes, 40k.

Regarding the delay in shifting when in "manual" mode - mine does it also, most noticeable under heavy acceleration at anything above 4k rpm. The wise old owls on here seem to think it's a trait of the AF33 box.

Just called local vx dealers and got a price of £28+vat for the transmission fluid and £110+vat for the filter... didnt expect such a hefty price for a filter :/

If your going to do it then I would do it the proper way if I were you - i.e flush it all through the oil cooler pipes - that way you will get all 7.5 (approx) litres out and not just the 3.5 (approx) litres by using the drain plug. I did it the drain plug way and noticed a slight improvement in shift, but I'm going to do it the proper way now as I should have done in the first place and this should improve things even more (and also do the box itself no end of good)!

I wasn't aware the AF33 had a filter fitted as standard (mine certainly hasn't)? but £110 & VAT is way too steep. I would try one of the magnetic aftermarket filters which can be picked up on ebay for approx £20 (from the USA) including delivery.

I'll be picking up one myself up as soon as I've checked the diameter of the hose at the weekend.
