knocking noise

hi guys,
got a knocking noise coming from o/s front wheel when turning wheel when stationary or pulling away and cornering at slowish speed.
is this the signs of a broken spring or something worse?

Commmon fault, most probably. The springs are moving in the "bottom plate" of your McPherson. At the bottom end of your front springs, there should be some protective plastic, kind of a 10 cm long "stocking".

check your gaiters haven't split open

described the prob to one of the mechanics in my work and he said the same about cv joints and drive shafts. (are these the same?)

anyone know roughly how much i should be looking to pay?

Just had my inner done for £95 so i suppose outer would be a bit cheaper

thats not as bad as a spring i suppose if it is the drive shaft(inner or outer)

cv gaiter as in above post is about the right price, but thats for the gaiter only, NOT the joint

there not cheap, so a decent back street garage will be your best bet, main dealer will want to take your house and kids to pay for it
