Default Strange goings on with revs.

Wasn't sure where to post this but i've put it in here anyway!

It's not my engine, it's my mum's 316 (I think) coupe BMW 52 reg. When idling the revs would sit just below 1000 for about 5 seconds, then raise to 1500 for about 5 seconds, then back down, then back up, and so on, following the pattern. Any idea what this could be?

That doesn't sound too healthy! Had a quick look under the bonnet, and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, was no EML on her car or anything.

check the pipe going to the idle speed control valve under the inlet on the right hand side... usually comes off as it swells or splits as it gets contaminated..very common among these.. also not gonna hurt to pull the ICV off and a clean with brake cleaner or the like...

Shall have a look tomorrow, glad to know it's a common prob! They're getting rid soon so hopefully it's nothing major!

Like DOSE says... Check the ICV, electronic throttle give that a clean too. My Mums Volvo C70 did this, the revs would bounce at idle like they were on a trampolene. My old mans a mechanic and flushed the system with some injector/carb cleaner stuff through the manifold..... No idea what it was but it sorted it right out.
