Default Average yearly car maintenance and repair costs

Summary: Looking to see what the average cost of service + repair is for people on here. Please ignore non-service/repair costs like tax/mot/insurance

I was wondering, what do you guys see as the usual cost of maintenance and repair of owning a car. Obviously theres big expenditures like a flywheel that you might only do once, and theres regular ones like service items, but then theres the odd repairs like an ABS failure or brake caliper seizure.

I'm trying to work out if i just have a warped idea of how much it should cost to keep my car on the road. I feel like i pay through the nose each year for my vectra, apart from a good few large jobs ive had to have done, i often find myself shelling out £100 every few months to fix a problem, or being landed with a MOT failure and few hundred quid repair bill to just get it too pass.

Obviously i expect a lot of peoples costs come down to how particular you are and whether you can do jobs yourself (i try, but not having a drive or garage to work on and living on main road, makes doing work difficult, so i probably spend quite a lot on labour).

Going on my immediate family, my bills are extreme, the old man hasn't spent a penny on repairs in the last 3 years, and has had no big repair bills that i know off, but then again he tends to run his cars into the ground. You guys on this forum however probably try and keep a pretty good standard of repair (especially those that modify their cars), but probably offset the costs involved in doing a lot of labour yourselves.

Anyway, i've added a poll just for the sake of ease, be interesting to see what others yearly maintenance spend on their cars is, maybe mine isn't as abnormal as i think.

Do you count upgrades/mods? Because I probably spend as much time upgrading as maintaining

Not really, not unless the repairs are to an upgraded version (i.e. replacing genuine ARB bushes with those powerflex ones rather than going genuine).

So if its a repair that also includes an upgrade, then include it, but if its an upgrade or mod that was purely for performance/apperance (i.e. upgrading the fuel pump so you can tune up the engine), then i'd say that wasn't an annual cost of owning a car, more of a cost of being an enthusiast.

Guess what im looking for is: "What is the average annual cost of keeping a car on the road, in a decent condition"

    that's fair enough

so for me i have had in the past 2 years , 2 rear control arms at £70 i think, 5 tyres £160, rear reg plate light replacement upgrade £10, rear exhaust back box replacement upgrade £150, drivers wing replacement £30, oil/air filter service i think maybe £70 all together, power steering replacement twice and still not right £60, i think that's it, it's quite hard to think of it all

so for 2 years 550, 275 for one year, all work done by myself, ill mark on poll

Cool, my yearly costs are actually around £300 i think which includes a lot of labour and annual service as i cant work do as much work on the car as i would like. However due to a few high list repairs (gearbox and flywheel), averaging those costs over the past 4 years of ownership, plus a further 2 years of expected ownership, its more in the region of £500 to £600 a year. Whilst i think thats extremely excessive and i should probably cut my losses if anything else big goes wrong, i'm starting to think it might just be in the higher portion of the "average band"... but like i said, i dont have any info to compare my own costs against currently, due to my dad and brother (the only other two people with cars that i know the running costs for) not being typical car owners and just turn the stereo up as the noises get louder :P

So depends on what goes wrong. Best scenario including servicing and consumables like tyres £200-300 a year, worst scenario can be in excess of £1000. To be fair does tend to average out over the time you own the car IMO

in the 7 years i've owned the vec from new , the worst has been between £500 - £600 in one year. 4 tyres, 4 discs & pads ,2 rear springs & a major service . usually just £250 a year for service & mot fee.

I've done roughly £200 per year, not including the timing chain as I bought the car with the chain gone, so over 3 years I've bought
4 new tyres (+ 4 free dunlops through work) £300
    new altenator £120
    2nd hand fuel pump £100
2nd hand drivers seat £20 plus heated seat kit £13
    front pads and discs £60
    rear spring £20
    rear shocks £50
    servicing £20

whoa that's quite scary really, not as bad as my snap on account over the last 17 years though £35k
